Rare Disease Day 2022

Rare Disease Day will be celebrated on Monday 28th of February.

Rare diseases, including the ones of genetic origin, are those that have a risk of death or chronic disability and have a low prevalence, lower than 5 out of 10,000 people in the European Union. They affect a total of 246,000 people within the twenty-seven member states of the European Union.

It is estimated that, currently, there are between 5,000 and 8,000 rare diseases that affect between 6% and 8% of the population, meaning, between 27 and 36 million people in the European Union. Most of these diseases are even rarer and affect 100,000 people or less.

In Spain, it is estimated that there are more than 3 million people affected by them; and in Catalonia, more than 400,000.
